People often ask where I get the ideas for my stories. The true answer is that ideas come from anywhere and everywhere.
The book EFFIE'S IMAGE is based on a very special lady named Hazel who
volunteered in my first grade classroom as a part of the Foster
Grandparent Program. Hazel's husband had passed away and her son and
his family lived in another state. She knew that she needed a reason to
leave her house everyday, and she found that reason in the smiles of
the children. She was a true inspiration to me, each and every day, and
she is greatly missed!
The idea for the book THE RING BEAR came from an overheard conversation
between two mothers at a baseball game. They were talking about
weddings. One of the mother's said that when her son was asked to be
the ring bearer in a wedding, he thought he was going to be a bear in
the wedding. They were laughing, but I thought, "There's an idea for a
story!" I wrote it down in my notebook, and thus began the long process
of turning an idea into a book.
TODAY I'M GOING FISHING WITH MY DAD, like most stories that I write, is
a mixture of memory and make-believe. I got the idea for the book when
I took my two oldest sons fishing for the first time. Although my
second son Kevin had a great time, Scott, my oldest, did not. And I
started to remember all of the times that I went fishing when I was a
kid, and how I really hated to go fishing. Then, whenever I shared this
experience with someone else, they had a fishing story to relate, as
well. And, before you knew it, TODAY I'M GOING FISHING WITH MY DAD, was
born!
